Peter Obi Faces ₦50 Billion Defamation Demand as Labour Party Chieftain Abayomi Arabambi Seeks Public Apology

Description: Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi demands a public apology, retraction, and ₦50 billion in damages from Peter Obi over alleged defamatory remarks made during a podcast interview.
A fresh legal battle may be brewing in Nigeria's political space as Labour Party National Vice Chairman (South-West), Abayomi Arabambi, has demanded a public apology, retraction, and ₦50 billion in damages from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over an alleged defamatory statement.

According to a legal notice issued by Neplus Ultra Attorneys, Arabambi's legal team accused Obi of making a false and damaging remark during a podcast interview in which he allegedly stated that Arabambi "does not have an address."

The letter, signed by Anderson U. Asemota, Peter O. Asimegbe, and Stanley C. Eziefulle, described the statement as false, malicious, and defamatory, arguing that it portrayed their client as an illegitimate public figure without credibility or a known identity.

The lawyers further alleged that the interview was widely circulated across national television stations and multiple digital platforms, significantly amplifying the statement and exposing Arabambi to public ridicule, embarrassment, and reputational damage.

According to the legal team, Arabambi has always maintained known residential and business addresses in Nigeria and remains actively involved in professional and political activities.

«"Our client has had a known residential and business address, maintains professional and political affiliations within Nigeria, and has never been a person whose whereabouts or identity were unknown," the letter stated.»

Arabambi Demands Public Apology and ₦50 Billion Compensation

As part of the legal demands, Arabambi is seeking:

- A full public retraction of the alleged statement.
- An unreserved apology to be aired on national television.
- Apologies published on Peter Obi's verified social media accounts.
- Full-page apology advertisements in major national newspapers.
- ₦50 billion in compensation for the alleged damage to his reputation, dignity, political standing, and public image.

The legal representatives argued that the alleged publication has caused lasting reputational harm and warned that further legal action could follow if the demands are not met.

The development adds another layer to Nigeria's evolving political landscape, with many observers closely watching to see whether the dispute will be resolved amicably or proceed to court.

As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi has not publicly responded to the allegations or the demands contained in the legal notice.
