Over 800 Snakes Escape Into Chinese Village After Floods Destroy Snake Farm, Venomous Cobras Among Those Missing

HENGZHOU, CHINA — Panic has gripped a village in southern China after more than 800 snakes, including venomous cobras, escaped from a snake farm that was destroyed by severe flooding triggered by torrential rains.
The alarming incident occurred in Dengwei Village, Hengzhou, in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where relentless rainfall caused reservoirs to overflow, washing away parts of the snake farm and releasing hundreds of reptiles into nearby communities.

Venomous Cobras Among Escaped Snakes

Local officials estimate that between 800 and 900 snakes escaped after floodwaters swept through the farm on July 6.

According to Wu Zhi, head of the Dengwei Village Committee, the escaped reptiles include both venomous and non-venomous species.

«"Around 800 to 900 snakes escaped after the farm was washed away by floodwaters. So far, one villager has been bitten by a snake and is receiving emergency treatment," Wu said.»

While many of the escaped animals are believed to be harmless water snakes, authorities confirmed that dangerous cobras were also among those released, raising fears for residents.

Villagers Bitten as Floods Cut Off Medical Access

Local reports indicate that multiple villagers have suffered snake bites, although many were stranded by floodwaters and unable to reach hospitals quickly due to damaged roads and ongoing flooding.

Officials have confirmed at least one person is receiving emergency medical treatment, while rescue operations continue across the affected areas.

Emergency Snake Hunt Underway

Chinese emergency authorities have deployed rescue teams to search for and capture the escaped reptiles.

In addition, more than a dozen volunteers from neighboring communities have formed a civilian snake-catching team, moving from house to house to remove snakes before they can harm residents.

Using fishing equipment and specialized tools, the volunteers have already captured several snakes found hiding on floating debris and floodwaters.

Authorities, however, are warning residents not to attempt catching snakes themselves, urging anyone who spots one to immediately notify local officials.

Flooding Caused by Torrential Rain

The disaster comes after days of intense rainfall linked to severe weather, causing reservoirs in Hengzhou to overflow and inundate surrounding communities.

Officials believe many of the escaped snakes have already been carried away by floodwaters, while others may not survive prolonged exposure to the harsh conditions.

Emergency teams remain on high alert as cleanup and rescue operations continue.

Authorities Continue Monitoring the Situation

The Hengzhou Emergency Management Bureau confirmed it is actively responding to the incident and says more official updates will be released as rescue efforts progress.

Residents are being advised to remain vigilant, avoid floodwaters where snakes may be hiding, and report any sightings immediately to emergency authorities.
