Fire Destroys 70,000 Pairs of Shoes at Former Bata Factory in Czech Republic, Causing $7 Million Loss

A devastating fire has destroyed 70,000 pairs of handcrafted shoes worth an estimated $7 million at a warehouse located on the historic grounds of the former Bata shoe factory in Zlín, Czech Republic, dealing a major blow to footwear company Vasky.

The blaze erupted early Thursday morning on the ninth floor of the 11-storey warehouse, quickly spreading through multiple levels of the building. According to firefighters, the fire remained out of control for several hours, causing repeated structural collapses and raising fears that the entire building may have to be demolished.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the damage to the warehouse and its contents is catastrophic.

Vasky Founder: "We Have Lost Almost Everything"

Reacting to the tragedy, Vasky founder Václav Staněk shared an emotional message on Facebook.

Staněk estimated that the destroyed inventory—including shoes and clothing—was worth approximately $7 million, representing years of craftsmanship and dedication.

A Company Reviving Bata's Historic Legacy

Founded in 2016, Vasky was created to revive the legendary shoemaking tradition established in 1894 by Tomáš Baťa, whose footwear empire transformed Zlín into one of Europe's most famous manufacturing cities.

Following Tomáš Baťa's death in a plane crash in 1932, the business expanded globally under Jan Antonín Baťa, eventually becoming one of the world's most recognized shoe brands.

After World War II, the original Bata factory was nationalized under the communist government and renamed Svit. The factory eventually closed following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, with parts of the complex later converted into museums, offices, and cultural sites.

Historic Warehouse Faces Demolition

The warehouse destroyed in Thursday's inferno—known as Building No. 34—was constructed during the late 1940s and early 1950s as a major shoe storage facility.

Fire officials say the structure has suffered severe damage, and if it does not collapse naturally, it may need to be demolished due to safety concerns.

Vasky Vows to Rebuild

Despite the enormous financial setback, Vasky says it has no plans to give up.

"We have lost what we had made, not the reason why we're doing it. We still have our people, our craftsmanship, and the determination to start again," Staněk said.

The company confirmed it will continue producing footwear from its manufacturing facilities near Zlín and in neighboring Slovakia, determined to rebuild stronger than before.
