KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda is mourning the loss of 24 young lives after three more pupils injured in the devastating King David Junior School bus crash died in hospital, raising the death toll from 21 to 24.

The tragic accident occurred along the Kaserem section of the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road in eastern Uganda during a school excursion, turning what was meant to be an educational trip into one of the country's deadliest school transport disasters.

The Uganda Police Force confirmed the latest casualty figure in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, SP Michael Kananura.

According to police, 18 victims have been positively identified, while six bodies remain unidentified. Three are at Kapchorwa Hospital and three at Mbale Hospital awaiting identification by their families.

Authorities also confirmed that 23 injured victims remain hospitalized at Kapchorwa Hospital, where medical teams continue to provide emergency treatment.

Driver Receiving Treatment

Police said the driver of the crashed bus has not yet been formally identified but is believed to have suffered critical injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at Mbale Hospital as investigators work to determine the exact cause of the crash.

School Excursion Ends in Heartbreak

The excursion departed Kampala at approximately 5:00 a.m., with pupils and teachers travelling in two buses and two taxis.

The remaining vehicles in the convoy were not involved in the accident and safely returned to Kampala with all passengers.

Uganda Suspends All School Excursions

In response to the tragedy, Ugandan authorities have announced the immediate suspension of all school excursions nationwide.

The move is intended to:

- Allow a full investigation into the crash.

- Strengthen safety regulations for school transportation.

- Review existing guidelines for educational trips.

- Launch nationwide road safety awareness campaigns for schools, transport operators, teachers, and parents.

Police have also instructed all schools currently on excursions to report to the nearest police station, where officers will provide escorts to ensure students return safely.

Police Extend Condolences

The Uganda Police Force expressed its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, the pupils, teachers, staff of King David Junior School, and the entire school community.

Officials said additional updates, including the outcome of the investigation and revised school transportation safety guidelines, will be announced in due course.

Renewed Calls for Safer School Transportation
