The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a new financing framework and institutional reforms aimed at improving electricity supply to hospitals and other healthcare facilities, with a target of providing reliable 24-hour power to at least 30 per cent of health facilities across the country by the end of 2027.

Federal Government Approves New Healthcare Electrification Framework
The latest decisions were reached during the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative.
At the meeting, the committee approved a financing framework designed to attract and mobilise investments for the electrification of healthcare facilities.
It also approved a separate facility energy management framework, which is expected to help participating hospitals properly manage and maintain their energy infrastructure after installation.

He said the committee also approved new governance arrangements for the programme and cleared eight private-sector proposals for further engagement.
The eight proposals were selected from approximately 70 submissions received during the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Week held in Lagos.

According to the Minister of State for Health, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has installed containerised solar power systems in approximately 100 hospitals nationwide.

Energy Management Teams have also reportedly been established in federal tertiary hospitals to oversee the efficient operation and maintenance of energy infrastructure.
