Apple Begins Displaying EU Energy Efficiency Labels on iPhone and iPad Pages
As of June 20, a new EU regulation requires all smartphone and tablet manufacturers to include an energy efficiency label with their devices sold in the European Union. While it's unclear how this will appear inside the physical packaging, Apple has already implemented the change on its official website for EU countries.
If you visit an iPhone or iPad product or purchase page in the EU, you’ll notice a small colorful icon. Clicking on it reveals the energy label, along with a detailed product information sheet. This document includes:
Repairability index
Rated battery capacity
Screen scratch resistance (Mohs hardness scale)
Minimum years of security updates
IP rating
Interestingly, Apple claims to have voluntarily downgraded its ratings due to unclear test procedures in the new regulation. In Apple’s words:
> "As an additional cautionary measure, Apple went one step further and downgraded some of its scores to factor in test method ambiguities and variance."
For example, while the iPhone models qualified for an “A” grade in energy efficiency, Apple chose to display a “B” rating to avoid discrepancies in third-party testing results. Similarly, scores for drop reliability were also adjusted.
