Oppo and Volkswagen Partner on 5G Patents to Power Smarter Connected Cars
Oppo and Volkswagen have officially signed a partnership deal granting the German auto giant access to Oppo’s cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including critical 5G technologies.
As vehicles become increasingly intelligent and connected, reliable mobile connectivity is vital. This collaboration allows Volkswagen to integrate Oppo’s advanced communication technologies into its next-gen vehicles, enhancing features that depend on strong cellular connections.
Oppo currently ranks 8th globally for 5G patent ownership, with over 62,000 patents and a presence in 40+ countries and regions. Notably, this marks Oppo’s first bilateral patent licensing agreement with an automaker—highlighting its growing role in the evolving automotive tech space.
For Volkswagen, this move supports its long-term goal of improving the in-car software experience, especially in China where it has lagged behind competitors.
