Ford Bronco Goes Electric — But Only for China (For Now)

The legendary Ford Bronco is going electric—but not in the way American fans might expect. In a surprising move, the first all-electric Ford Bronco will debut exclusively in China, with both battery-electric (BEV) and range-extended (EREV) versions launching later this year. This marks a major shift for the iconic off-road SUV as Ford adapts to the growing demand for EVs in global markets.
The new Bronco EV models are being developed through Ford’s joint venture with Jiangling Motors (JMC) and utilize advanced Chinese battery technology from BYD, including its highly regarded LFP Blade batteries. The Chinese government’s vehicle approval filings have confirmed two electric variants of the Bronco and revealed key specs well ahead of the official launch.

Dual-Motor Power and Long Range

The pure electric Ford Bronco is equipped with dual electric motors producing a combined 311 horsepower (232 kW)—with a 130 kW motor up front and a 202 kW motor at the rear for full all-wheel drive capability. The SUV is powered by a massive 105.4 kWh BYD LFP battery, offering an impressive 650 km range under China’s CLTC cycle. The top speed is limited to 170 km/h.
EREV Variant for Extended Range

The second version is a Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (EREV). It runs on electricity from a 43.7 kWh battery, giving it a 220 km EV-only range. A 1.5-liter gasoline generator provides additional power when needed, bringing the total range to a staggering 1,220 km. Importantly, the engine does not drive the wheels—it only charges the battery or supplies power to the motors, ensuring a smooth electric driving experience.
Size, Tech, and Off-Road Style

Both versions are large, five-seat SUVs, measuring 5,025 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,815 mm high. The EV version weighs 2,630 kg, while the EREV comes in at 2,510 kg. Design-wise, teaser images and leaked documents reveal a familiar boxy Bronco silhouette, but now with modern touches like a lidar sensor above the windshield—hinting at upcoming semi-autonomous driving features.

Built for China, But What About the U.S.?

By leveraging partnerships with JMC for manufacturing and BYD for batteries, Ford is optimizing the Bronco for the Chinese market. There’s no official word yet on whether the Bronco EV or EREV will make it to North America or other regions, but this launch could signal what’s to come for Ford’s global electric strategy.
For now, the Ford Bronco EV is a China-exclusive off-roader that blends iconic styling with cutting-edge EV technology, setting the stage for future electrified adventures.
