Tragedy in Missouri: Pilot and 11 Skydivers Killed in Fiery Plane Crash Moments After Takeoff
A devastating plane crash in western Missouri claimed the lives of a pilot and 11 passengers on Sunday, turning what was meant to be a routine skydiving trip into a heartbreaking tragedy.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft took off from Butler Memorial Airport at approximately 11:35 a.m. but crashed just moments later before gaining significant altitude.
Dennis Jacobs, Bates County’s emergency management director and acting airport manager, said the aircraft never climbed higher than 100 to 200 feet above the ground.
“It was barely above the trees,” Jacobs explained, noting that the plane suddenly made a sharp left turn before plunging roughly 300 yards from the runway.
The crash occurred in full view of some victims’ family members and loved ones who had gathered at the airport to watch the skydivers depart, making the tragedy even more devastating.
Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Justin Ewing said the aircraft crashed into a nearby field and was quickly engulfed in flames, leaving little chance of survival for those on board.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but all 12 occupants of the aircraft were pronounced dead.
Federal authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to lead the inquiry, though officials cautioned that it could take one to two years before a final report is released.
The tragedy has left the local community in mourning as families seek answers about the disaster.
