U.N. Accuses Hamas of Disrupting Gaza Aid Distribution; Hamas Denies Allegations

The United Nations has accused Hamas of disrupting humanitarian aid distribution in the Gaza Strip, warning that the alleged interference is placing additional hardship on civilians already facing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Hamas has strongly denied the accusations, insisting the incident was part of a law enforcement operation rather than an attempt to obstruct aid.

According to the U.N., humanitarian operations were temporarily suspended after armed men entered a World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution center in northern Gaza and reportedly assaulted two truck drivers inside a WFP warehouse.

Ramiz Alakbarov, the U.N.'s Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories, condemned the incident, describing it as part of an increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence, and obstruction targeting humanitarian operations.

He warned that such actions endanger aid workers, disrupt the delivery of life-saving assistance, and make it even more difficult for humanitarian organizations to reach civilians in desperate need.

Hamas, however, rejected the U.N.'s account. In a statement, the group's media office said police forces were responding to reports of smuggled cigarettes and mobile phone components allegedly hidden inside aid shipments. Hamas maintained that the operation was not an attack on humanitarian workers and did not interfere with the delivery of aid.

The latest dispute comes more than two and a half years after the Israel–Hamas war began following Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Since then, much of Gaza has been devastated by the conflict, with widespread destruction, massive displacement, and severe shortages of food, water, fuel, electricity, and medical supplies.

International aid agencies continue to warn that millions of Palestinians rely on uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to survive. At the same time, ceasefire negotiations aimed at securing hostage releases, improving humanitarian access, and ending the conflict have remained stalled for months.

As conditions continue to deteriorate, global attention remains focused on ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most while protecting the safety of relief workers operating in one of the world's most challenging conflict zones.
