Samuel Adegbeyi ‘Baami’ Reveals How Hardship Led Him to Content Creation Success

Content creator Samuel Adegbeyi, popularly known as Baami, shares his inspiring journey from childhood hardship and debt to social media success and celebrity collaborations.

Samuel Adegbeyi, popularly known as Baami, has opened up about his difficult childhood, struggles with discrimination, relationship challenges, debt and eventual rise as a social media content creator.

In an interview with Temitope Adetunji, Baami shared the experiences that shaped his life and explained how an unexpected turn of events eventually led him into the world of content creation.

Today, the creator has built a significant audience on social media and has worked with several popular Nigerian skit makers and entertainers, despite initially having no plans to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Baami’s difficult childhood

Baami said his challenges began while he was still in secondary school.

According to him, his father became seriously ill in 2009 and later died. Following his father's death, he moved in with one of his father's relatives, who helped him continue his education.

After completing secondary school in 2015, Baami said he struggled to further his education because of financial difficulties.

He eventually stayed with a neighbour who initially treated him well. However, he said the situation later changed and he experienced neglect because members of his family were not readily available to take responsibility for his welfare.

His circumstances eventually came to the attention of another neighbour, who listened to his story and offered him accommodation.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Baami said he remained determined to build a career for himself.

At the time, his ambition was to become an accountant.

How Baami started content creation

Baami said his journey into content creation began in 2024 while he was in his final year of an HND programme.

He explained that he met a man who later became his manager, and the manager encouraged him to try content creation.

Initially, Baami was reluctant.

He said he did not want to expose his personal life on social media or become a public figure. However, his manager continued to encourage him until he eventually agreed to give content creation a chance.

That decision, he said, became a major turning point in his life.

Baami initially viewed content creation as something secondary because his primary ambition was still to become a chartered accountant. But as his audience grew and opportunities began to emerge, he started seeing content creation as a viable career.

From online content to collaborations with celebrities

Baami said his growing visibility eventually led several skit makers to invite him to appear in their content.

Although he has not acted in conventional movies, he has featured in several skits and online productions.

He said he has worked with about five or six content creators and entertainers so far.

Among the personalities he mentioned are Oluwadolarz, Nasboi, Shank and Cute Abiola.

Baami said working with established creators has helped him gain confidence and improve his craft.

He also recalled his first encounter with Cute Abiola, saying the comedian corrected and guided him when necessary without embarrassing him.

According to Baami, the positive treatment he received from established creators encouraged him to continue developing his skills.

Battling discrimination and hurtful comments

Baami also spoke about discrimination he experienced while growing up.

He said some classmates initially avoided associating with him because of his physical condition.

However, he said their attitude changed after they got to know him and discovered his abilities.

He also revealed that he has received hurtful comments about his appearance over the years.

Rather than allowing those comments to define him, Baami said he chose to concentrate on self-improvement.

He admitted that some of these experiences affected him emotionally and that there were periods when he became deeply depressed because of the treatment he received and the challenges he faced.

How a failed relationship left him trapped in debt

One of the most difficult chapters of Baami's life, according to him, involved a past relationship.

He said he met a woman while he was in school and eventually developed a romantic relationship with her.

Wanting to support her financially, he borrowed about N30,000 from an online loan platform and combined it with his personal savings to help her start a business.

However, he said the relationship changed after she received the money.

Baami explained that the short repayment period on the loan became a major problem when he could not repay it on time.

According to his account, the debt and accumulated charges eventually grew to more than N300,000.

In an attempt to repay the initial loan, he began borrowing from other loan platforms, which eventually created a cycle of debt.

He said the financial pressure affected both his emotional wellbeing and daily life.

For several months, he struggled to function normally and spent much of his time indoors. A friend he was living with helped him through the difficult period by preparing food and caring for him.

Baami described that period as one of the hardest experiences of his life.

His first major earnings from TikTok

Despite his struggles, social media eventually became a major source of financial opportunity for Baami.

He said he started generating income through TikTok after his manager encouraged him to regularly host live sessions.

During the live broadcasts, viewers supported him through virtual gifts and other forms of financial support.

Baami said he initially did not understand that the gifts he received could be converted into money.

He recalled receiving his first major TikTok payout of approximately N500,000.

That experience gave him greater confidence in content creation and showed him that social media could become a sustainable career.

Baami expands to Facebook

After making progress on TikTok, Baami expanded his presence to other platforms, including Facebook.

He said he began earning from Facebook in January, despite having started his content creation journey in 2024.

According to him, his first Facebook payment was approximately $200.

He has since continued building his audience across different platforms.

Baami said his Facebook page currently has about 1.3 million followers.

He also revealed that his main TikTok account, which had approximately 1.4 million followers, was banned several months ago. The TikTok account currently being used by his audience is his backup account, according to him.

Why Baami chose content creation over accounting

Although Baami studied with the intention of pursuing a professional career in accounting, he said he no longer plans to use his certificate to seek conventional employment.

He explained that content creation has provided opportunities that have allowed him to pay his bills and support himself.

Baami also pointed to his age as another factor affecting his plans to pursue the traditional graduate route, noting that he has passed the age requirement for NYSC.

Rather than placing himself under unnecessary pressure, he said he has chosen to concentrate on the career that is currently working for him.

He is also developing his YouTube presence, although he said he has not started earning from the platform.

Baami believes his struggles shaped his success

Looking back at his journey, Baami said he believes the difficult experiences he encountered were part of God's plan for his life.

He explained that his financial problems prevented him from returning to school at the time he initially planned.

That delay eventually created an opportunity for him to meet the person who would become his manager.

Had he returned to school according to his original plan, Baami believes he might never have met his manager or started creating content.

For him, the setbacks that once appeared to be obstacles ultimately redirected his life.

He now sees his experiences as part of the journey that brought him to where he is today.

His hopes for marriage and genuine love

Baami also opened up about his views on marriage and relationships.

He said he still hopes to get married and revealed that his family also encourages him to settle down.

However, he said finding someone who genuinely loves and supports him remains important.

Baami expressed concern that some people may now be attracted to him because of his growing popularity, financial success or public profile.

Despite those concerns, he remains hopeful that he will eventually find a partner who genuinely loves him and supports his ambitions.

Baami's vision for the future

Looking ahead, Baami said he believes his content creation career has the potential to become international.

He already has followers outside Nigeria and mentioned countries such as India among the places where he has fans.

His ambition is to reach a much larger global audience over the next three to five years.

Baami wants to establish himself as a creator whose content can be enjoyed by people around the world.

From hardship to a growing digital career

Baami's story is one of an unexpected career transformation.

The young man who once dreamed of becoming an accountant now finds himself building a career in digital entertainment, working alongside established creators and reaching millions of social media users.

His journey has included bereavement, financial hardship, discrimination, emotional struggles, relationship difficulties and overwhelming debt.

Yet, according to Baami, those experiences eventually led him to opportunities he never expected.

As he continues to grow his presence across TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, the content creator says his ultimate goal is to become a global digital entertainer.

For Baami, the journey is far from over.
